The event was graced with activities that ranged from holding special prayer, planting of trees, presenting of petitions to leaders, among other activities
In unison, church congregations spoke out against poverty reading a prayer and pledging together to alleviate poverty. The stand up and take action campaign is aimed at encouraging people from all walks of life to STAND UP to bring poverty down: to SPEAK OUT for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals: to STANDUP against injustice and inequality: to SPEAKOUT to demand that our government’s promises are kept; to STAND UP and be counted; to SPEAK OUT to be heard and; to TAKE ACTION to demand for action that promises become real. The stand up and take action campaign begun in 2000 in New York with the adoption of the Millennium Declaration by 189 world leaders including the leader of Uganda. In the declaration, the leaders committed themselves to fighting extreme poverty and have it eradicated by 2015. Uganda, like other poor countries pledged to: 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger 2. achieve Universal Education 3. promote gender inequality and empowerment 4. reduce child mortality 5. improve maternal health 6. combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other disease 7. ensure environmental sustainability 8. develop a global partnership 2. To allocate significant resources to the community development programmes. 3. To fight corruption and become more accountable to their citizens In the pledge, the leaders stated that “we will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than billion of them are currently subjected. We are committed to making the right to development a reality for everyone and to freeing the entire human race from want.”
